Australia's captain Poised for a Key Part in the Ashes

Australian cricket captain

The pace bowler has taken 309 Test scalps in 71 Test matches with an stellar bowling average.

The Australian selection chief the selector has stated that skipper Cummins will play a "major part" in this winter's historic rivalry.

Rumors had circulated that the veteran bowler might sit out due to a ongoing back issue that was still troubling him.

Previous updates from team management suggested no official announcement had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the Test matches kicking off on November 21 in Perth.

He revealed that his recovery is on track and was "optimistic" about the likelihood of participating.

"It's clear that the window is narrowing and there are permutations around that, aside from the physical problem, but further aspects," he commented.

"We're encouraged. [We are] really confident that he's going to play a key capacity. Hopefully from the opening match. Should that not happen, then we'll pick it up."

Past Concerns

He was sidelined the ODI and T20 games against New Zealand and India last month after medical tests showed a stress reaction in his back.

There is a track record of recurring issues, with setbacks in multiple past seasons causing him to miss three Australian summers in a limited period.

Cummins stated he would be proactive in his approach in his rehabilitation process to ensure his availability for the contest.

He mentioned that there was no confirmation if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his comeback but conceded it was "becoming urgent" for him to recover fully for the first Test.

Backup Options

In case of absence, veteran batsman Smith will assume leadership.

Versatile player Green was recently pulled out from the national team for their ODI contests against India as a precautionary measure because of soreness in his side.

He labeled it as a "minor" injury and stated that he'll feature in the state-level matches, so will be "in a good place to deliver overs."

"We put so much time has gone into creating the schedule for him to be available for the initial game as an dual-role player," he elaborated.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the initial matches in any case. How he handles the willow in shorter formats, even if it just sets him back for a short period, we opted to adopt a safer strategy."
